Vocal Assessment Info

First of all, relax! It’s going to be friendly and welcoming!

With the exception of the pre-school Sources and DeCoro, all singers have a vocal assessment by one of our faculty. These vocal assessments are to make sure that singers are placed where they will have the most success in the choirs, based on their skills and abilities.

In the 15-minute vocal assessment, singers will be asked a few questions about why they want to join a Coastal Sound choir, and will have a short, friendly, no-stress singing lesson. Singers will usually know at the end of this time which level they have been recommended to join.

Young singers can expect the following in their assessment:

  • sing something as simple and familiar as “Happy Birthday” or “O Canada.”
  • echo back short melodies

Experienced singers may be asked to do the following:

  • sing scales with piano accompaniment
  • sight-sing a short musical passage.

Coastal Sound’s season runs from September to June. Current members are evaluated by their directors in April/ May/June for placement the following Fall. Placement for new students is ongoing each year.
