PRESS RELEASE: Dream Things True – Music of The Imagination Youth Choir Concert May 25

COQUITLAM, BC – Choral fans across the Lower Mainland are in for a treat on May 25th as Coastal Sound Youth Choir joins musical forces with Edmonton Youth Choir in Dream Things True: Music of the Imagination. Under the direction of conductors Joel Tranquilla and John Wiebe, the choirs will kick-off their Western Canada tour with a program that features a fantastic array of both Canadian and internationally composed choral works. The concert will take place in the beautiful acoustic of St. John’s Shaughnessy Church in Vancouver. Special guests Burnaby Mountain Secondary Chamber Choir, directed by Deanna Gestrin will add their voices to the program.

From Polynesian chant to Swedish progressive rock, and works by renowned choral composers, including Jeff Enns, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Jake Runestad, and Eric Whitacre, Dream Things True is a collaborative choral experience, bringing together two of the finest youth choirs in the country. A night of creation, collaboration, friendship, and music for the whole family, Dream Things True is an example of the vibrancy and passion of youth.

Following the Vancouver performance, the choirs will take Dream Things True on the road, with informal concerts along the way to formal performances in Calgary and Edmonton.

Edmonton Youth Choir

EYC is the oldest choir in the Edmonton Youth & Children’s Choir family and focuses on advanced, a cappella repertoire.  The choir has competed successfully in festivals and competitions across Canada and Europe, has been heard nationally on CBC Radio, has recorded six CDs, and tours have taken the group to locales across Canada and around the world. In July 2014, the choir received two Gold Medals for their performances at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia and in 2016 they toured South Africa.  When not touring the choir has presented full-scale choral-orchestral works with members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Edmonton Youth Orchestra.

Coastal Sound Youth Choir

The Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become well-known throughout the Canadian choral community for its passionate, creative and heartfelt performances, representing the true energy and determination of Canadian youth. In 2013, Coastal Sound was awarded first place in the youth choir category at the ACCC National Competition for Amateur Choirs, and was also chosen, along with Elektra Women’s Choir, to represent Canada at the 2013 Chorus America Conference. In 2016 the Coastal Sound Youth Choir was selected as a showcase choir for Podium, Choral Canada’s national, biennial conference and festival.

Burnaby Mountain Secondary Chamber Choir

The Burnaby Mountain Secondary Chamber Choir, recognized for their musicality and choral excellence, is comprised of singers ages 13 to 17. Under the direction of Deanna Gestrin, the singers learn advanced vocal and choral technique through the study of repertoire spanning a variety of cultures, styles, and time periods. The BMSS Chamber Choir gives numerous performances each year in contexts ranging from school and community performances, to festivals and tours. They also have the unique opportunity of working with local and visiting vocal clinicians each year. Among other performance highlights, they were recently invited to perform at the British Columbia School Superintendents Association’s annual conference.
