Celebrate the Beauty of the Season with Coastal Sound Youth Choir
Winter wonderlands aren’t always made of snow. Coastal Sound Youth Choir creates nature-inspired beauty with their 50 luminous and expressive voices, along with their new conductor Joel Tranquilla and pianist David Antoniuk.
The imaginative program sparkles with songs you’ll love: standard choral repertoire such as Bach’s motet Lobet den Herrn all Heiden and Lauridsen’s Sure on This Shining Night; recently composed works by outstanding Canadian composers such as Jeff Enns and Jason Jestadt; and new arrangements of pop songs like Joni Mitchell’s River and Imogen Heap’s Can’t Take It In.
Listeners can expect to really get into the spirit of the season, with audience sing- a-longs, thoughtful piano interludes, rousing pieces sung by a massed choir of 100 singers, and the warmth of emotion that the music evokes.
“I try to build concert programs as though I’m an art curator putting together a series of installations. Some Baroque with Neoclassic here, a Marian motet alongside Leonard Cohen there…Joni Mitchell and Debussy are in dialogue while Sondheim introduces a gospel number. I like variety, and I always hope that there will be something for everyone in the audience,” says conductor Joel Tranquilla.
The Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become known in the Canadian choral community for their passionate and imaginative performances. The choir is made up of 50 young people aged 16-24, representing over ten different municipalities from across the Metro Vancouver area of British Columbia. Eclectic, heartfelt, creative, and full of the energy and determination of youth, Coastal Sound Youth Choir performances have become a destination for music fans across the region.
This is the first concert for the choir under the artistic direction of Dr. Joel Tranquilla. Tranquilla, a singer himself, also serves as associate conductor of the Canadian Chamber Choir, and brings a highly skilled and vibrant energy to the group. David Antoniuk, a brilliant young pianist, joins the Coastal Sound Music Academy team this season.
Also on the program, cameo performances by Coastal Sound Children’s Choir and adult group DeCoro.
