Saturday, February 27th at 7pm at St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church.
It’s impossible not to be transfixed in wonder at the celestial phenomenon that is the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. The way the lights move like glimmering curtains in the sky has inspired choral music that will similarly glimmer, with overtones ringing and spinning in the arches of the church when Coastal Sound Youth Choir sings excerpts from Otto Nikolai’s Mass. Other works to be performed refer to the night sky, like Monteverdi’s stunning motet Darà la notte, Audrey Snyder’s Silent Moon and Stars I Shall Find.
Artistic director Diana Clark has also programmed music that reflects Coastal Sound’s own kind of “Northern Lights”, with two new works by the brilliant young Canadian composer Laura Hawley: Earth Voices and The Sun Is Mine.
“We are eager to have audiences hear these lovely new works. Canadian choral music is thriving,” enthuses Clark.
From the tiny Sources, who will begin the concert by joyfully welcoming everyone in song, to the grand finale where all 200 singers will be on stage together, listeners can be sure that they will be entertained, engaged and uplifted.
A rousing rendition of We Are One by Vancouver’s own Brian Tate, a surprise audience sing-along, and more choral pieces old and new, round out the program.
