FROM THE GREY CUP TO OLD HOLLYWOOD: AWARD-WINNING YOUTH CHOIR SINGS FOR ALL
Seasonal Favourites to Fill Historic Christ Church Cathedral Under the Direction of One of Canada’s Best-known Choral Conductors
Coquitlam, BC (November 12, 2014) – The beautiful sounds of the Coastal Sound Youth Choir will ring to the rafters in downtown Vancouver at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, December 6th with familiar Christmas carols including a tribute to classic Hollywood with A Holly Jolly Christmas, Snow, and music from A Charlie Brown Christmas. This year featuring arrangements by local composers Girvan, Griffiths, Henderson, Nickel, Quick, Ramsay, Washburn, Wilson, and Zwozdesky, Christmas with the Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become a holiday tradition for many lower mainland families and named in various ‘Best Of’ seasonal lists over the years.
Artistic Director of Vancouver’s Elektra Women’s Choir, Guest Conductor Morna Edmundson fills in for Coastal Sound’s Associate Artistic Director and new mother Carrie Tennant for the 2014-15 season. “Our show on December 6th promises to be fresh, captivating and complete with audience sing-alongs’, says Edmundson, who brings over 30 years of choral experience to the group. “It is a pleasure to work with and be inspired by these young people and to share with them the music I love.”
Also taking the stage with the 55 voice youth choir, will be accompanist George Chung and special guests Coastal Sound Children’s Choir. The Children’s Choir is no stranger to supporting such holiday festivity, having joined Michael Buble as guest singers on his CTV Holiday Special in 2013.
Invitations as exciting as Buble’s are becoming frequent honors for Coastal Sound Music. This past summer the Youth Choir backed Universal Recording artists Hey Ocean on the PNE Summer Stage and on Sunday, November 30th both choirs will sing O Canada at the 2014 Grey Cup. From rock concerts to football fields, this eclectic choir continues to exhibit the range of artistry that earned them the distinction of being 2013’s Top Choir at national music competitions.
Diana Clark, Artistic Director of Coastal Sound, says it is important to take the time out. “During this busy holiday season, taking an evening to experience a choral performance means having a couple hours of quiet reflection, to escape, to be uplifted and filled with the joy of the season, all in one go! And Christ Church Cathedral is one of the most stunning and inspiring places to hear choral music- it certainly is a thrill to sing there.”
Christmas with the Coastal Sound Youth Choir kicks off a robust season for Coastal Sound Music. Beginning with two different concerts full of holiday cheer in December, the 2014-15 season also brings the world premiere of new work from composer Kristopher Fulton, rollicking folk tunes from the Maritimes and closes with the popular Indiekör show at the Vogue Theatre.
